There Is No Funeral Prayer

One of the fundamental concepts of Islam, "salât," is generally understood in traditional Islam as "prayer" (namaz), but in the Quran it carries different meanings in different contexts. In Surah At-Tawbah, verse 84, Allah states:
> "And do not perform salât over any of them who dies, ever, or stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient."
In this verse, the expression "to perform salât" is used not in the sense commonly known as "prayer" (namaz), but rather in the sense of supplication (dua). Allah informed our Prophet Muhammad that he should not make supplication for the hypocrites who died at that time, nor should he stand at their graves. The verse states that these individuals did not accept Islam and denied Allah and His Messenger, and because they died in a state of wickedness (fisq), Allah commanded that His mercy and forgiveness not be sought on their behalf.
In Islam, supplication — turning to Allah, seeking His help and forgiveness — is an important part of a believer's life. The expression "to perform salât" also reminds our Prophet Muhammad and his community of their duty to pray to Allah and seek His mercy. However, the usage in this verse draws attention to the conditions of supplication. Muslims should not make supplication for those who do not believe and who reject Islam.
In this context, "to perform salât" refers not only to praying for a person after their death, but also to the necessity of paying attention to that person's state of disbelief and corruption during their lifetime. This situation points to the importance not only of supplication after death, but also of the beliefs people hold throughout their lives. The Prophet Muhammad was commanded not to stand for those who did not believe and who had rebelled against Allah, because their disbelief constitutes an obstacle to Allah's mercy and forgiveness.
In Islam, supplication is also a search for consolation and mercy. However, this supplication must carry meaning — it must be performed with sincere faith and submission to Allah. When Muslims make supplication, they are sincerely seeking true forgiveness and mercy from Allah. The prohibition of "salât" in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 84, also points to the futility of supplicating for those who did not believe, without knowledge of their condition in the Hereafter.
According to Islam, supplication only carries meaning for those who are on the right path and who have submitted to Allah. Although the word "salât" in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 84, is traditionally understood in Islam as the "funeral prayer," there is no funeral prayer in Islam. And in the verse as well, it is used in the meaning of supplication (dua), not prayer (namaz).
The Prophet Muhammad was commanded not to make supplication for those who did not believe, because their rebellion against Allah and their dying in a state of corruption prevents their forgiveness. This verse provides an important clue for understanding the culture of supplication in Islam and the conditions under which supplication is made.
In conclusion, there is no funeral prayer. The act of "performing salât" in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 84, means making supplication (dua). Supplication is an act of worship performed with sincere faith and submission, and it only carries meaning for those who are on the right path.
