Pink Floyd’un kökeni, Londra’da mimarlık okuyan Waters, Wright ve Mason’ın, aralarına Clive Metcalf, Keith Noble ve Juliette Gale’i de alarak 1965 yılında Sigma 6 adında bir grup kurmasına dayanır.Grup kısa bir süre sonra dağılırken, Waters, Mason ve Wright, aralarına resim öğrenimi gören Syd Barrett’ı da alarak tekrar bir grup oluşturdular. Close ayrıldı ve grup, gitarda ve vokalde Syd Barrett, basta Roger Waters, klavyede Rick Wright ve davulda Nick Mason olmak üzere yoluna devam etti. Syd, Pink Anderson ve Floyd Council isimli iki Georgia’lı cazcıdan esinlenerek bulduğu Pink Floyd Sound ismiyle gelene kadar grubun farklı zamanlarda farklı isimleri oldu: Screaming Abdabs, T-Set, Maggadeaths ve Architectural Abdabs. Syd’in sekse, uyuşturucuya ve rock&roll’a olan ilgisi yüzünden Floyd kısa sürede underground bir grup haline geldi. 1966’da, grup Syd’in yazdığı yeni şarkıları repertuvarına almıştı. Bu dönemde daha saykodelik bir grup haline gelirken, 13 Mart’da Londra’daki Marguee Club’da düzenlenen‘Spontenaous Underground’ konserlerinde her pazar düzenli olarak sahneye çıkmaya başladılar. Sonra aniden Londra’daki en hippi grup haline geldiler. Menajerleri olan Jenner ve King, onları UFO kulübüyle tanıştırdı. Orada Jimi Hendrix, Arthur Brown, Soft Machine gibi dönemin önemli isimleriyle birlikte çaldılar. Grup, Nick’in davuldan çıkardığı ritmik ve melodik seslerle beraber deneysel çalışmalar yapıyordu ve ortaya çıkan garip ses efektleriyle dolu müzikleri ile dinleyenlerin beğenisini kazanıyorlardı. Essex Üniversitesinde verdikleri konserin ardından, 1967’de ilk 45’likleri ‘Arnold Layne’i kaydettiler. Ancak henüz bir şirketle kontratları yoktu. EMI, grupla anlaştı ve Arnold Layne’in haklarını aldı. Floyd, Nisanda tekrar stüdyoya girdi ve ilk albümleri için 5 parça kaydetti Syd ‚ See Emily Play’ isimli bir şarkı yazdı ve 16 Haziranda piyasaya çıktı. Melody Maker’da 5 numaraya kadar yükseldi. Bu, BBC’nin ‘Top of The Pops’ programında görünmek zorunda olmaları demekti. Fakat Syd tuhaf davranışlar göstermeye başlamıştı: televizyonda göründükleri süre içinde sadece ayakta durup tuhaf kelimeler mırıldanmıştı. Bu işlerine yaradı çünkü Syd’in bu şekilde davranması, Floyd’u eğlence dünyasının oyuncağı olmaktan kurtarmıştı. 5 Ağustos’ta ilk Pink Floyd albümü “The Piper At The Gates of Dawn” yayınlandı. Bestelerde Syd Barrett’ın imzası dikkat çekiyordu. Pink Floyd’un jazza en yakın olduğu albümün bu albüm olduğu söylenebilir. Floyd, o yıl yedincisi yapılan National Jazz & Blues konserinden Syd’in sinirlerinin oldukça yıpranması sebebiyle ayrıldı. Eylül’de İngiltere konserlerine başlayan grubun listeye giren parçalarını dinlemeye gelen bir çok insan hayal kırıklığına uğradı. Çünkü grup liste parçalarını çalmıyordu. Bunun yerine aynı parçaların orjinallerinden çok farklı olan emprovizelerini yapıyordu. 1968 yılında, Roger, gruba Syd’in ritim gitar çalan eski arkadaşı Dave Gilmour’ı dahil etti. Bir gün grup Dave’e parçaları öğretmeye çalışırken, Syd yeni parçalarla geldi. Her defasında ‘Have You Ever Got It Yet’ isimli parçayı değiştire değiştire anlatıyordu. Değiştirdi, değiştirdi, ve kimse bu parçayı öğrenemedi…bu olayın hemen ardından, 2 Mart’ta, Syd gruptan kovuldu. Gruba adını veren, bütün parçaları ve şarkı sözlerini yazan Syd’in ayrılması Pink Floyd’un altın devrinin sona ermesi anlamına geliyordu. Grup, cesaretini, ruhunu, çılgın dahisini kaybetmişti. Gerçekten zor zamanlardı fakat herşeye baştan başlamaya karar verip yollarına devam ettiler. Dave’in gruba katılmasından kısa bir süre sonra, Nisan’ın 12’sinde ‘It Will Be So Nice /Julia Dream’ 45’liği, 2 ay sonrada ikinci albümleri olan “A Saurceful of Secrets” piyasaya çıktı ve İngiltere listelerinde 9 numaraya kadar yükseldi. “A Saurceful Of Secrets” tam bir geçiş albümüydü. Albüm gruba güven vermişti çünkü Barrett olmadan da çalabildiklerini gördüler. Grup 4 Temmuz’da ABD’ye gitti. Tüm bu konserler sırasında grup yeni bir imaj yakalamış ve tekrar zirveye doğru tırmanmaya başlamıştı
